Recently investors in the MGM felt there may be a problem at the MGM Mirage. MGM’s 4th quarter earnings report was long overdue and actually the release had not even been scheduled.

Last week MGM made the announcement that it was tapped out of their $4.5 billion revolving credit facility, as it was down to only $842 million. After the announcement the 3 main credit reporting agencies, which are Moody’s, Fitch, and Standard & Poor’s, all downgraded the credit rating as well as individual debt ratings of MGM.

Recently the owner of the Bellagio, Mirage, and MGM Grand properties announced that they were not able to submit financial findings to the SEC, as they were still in the process of assessing their condition financially. In their notice to the SEC, MGM reported that they thought it would be a breach of their loan agreements this year, which would be a default on their senior debt and it would also potentially bring on defaults on other debt instruments.

The filing also stated that MGM was in current negotiations to amend their senior debt agreements. However, they did not have any assurances that the negotiations would amount to anything. March 17th of this year is the new date that MGM will release their earnings announcement.

While most of the effort in Texas has been geared towards trying to increase live poker that is legal by reintroducing Texas Hose Bill 222, a lawyer in Dallas, David Tucker, has recently filed a civil suit against Texas, as well as the city of Dallas, in trying to get his business concept for spreading poker to be declared legal in the state.

The suit is Pick-Up Poker Inc. vs. the State of Texas and the City of Dallas, is seeking a judgment of declaration to relieve Tucker’s business, which is Pick-Up Poker, from “uncertainty and insecurity with respect to rights, status and other legal relations” in regards to live poker.

Founded in December of last year, Pick-Up Poker is planning to lease poker rooms that are furnished to private parties of poker players to use them in the player’s home games that would be legal.

The lawsuit was filed by Tucker in order to clarify the business plan and its standing as being different from Texas underground poker games, as well as to fight the state’s gambling statutes that are currently in place in Texas. The current statutes in the state see poker games in the state as “public nuisances.” Pick-Up Poker is trying to position themselves as being a “cashless poker system” where poker players would deposit money with the company, play with their chips, and then have refunds issued on the chips later. This approach, which is quite unique, is set up in order to set it apart from underground poker games.

Many underground poker games have been victimized by robberies in the past few months.

Considering that the U.S. economy is slumping, the regulating of the internet gambling industry may help the country out. Even though the internet gambling industry took a big hit when the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) was passed by the Bush administration, many have called to reverse the act, which blocks internet payment methods.

A recent report from Reuters may stoke the fire to the controversial issue of reversing the UIGEA. In the report Reuters cited a study from PricewaterhouseCoopers stating,

The United States could raise nearly $52 billion in revenue over the next decade by lifting [the UIGEA] and taxing the activity instead.

There are now reasons for optimism in the U.S. for regulating the internet gambling industry that are:

A new administration with new president Barack Obama, who wants to jolt the nation’s economy.

A European Union suggestion that they may take action against the U.S. in terms of their stance on Internet gambling.
Representative Barney Frank has recently stated that he will propose new legislation that will seek to reverse the UIGEA.

The Reuters report went on to say,

Gambling advocates hope the U.S. government’s need for new revenue in the aftermath of huge bailout and stimulus packages will boost chances for Congress to replace the ban with new measures to regulate and tax online gambling.

In the 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Nguyen made history by winning the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event. At that event Nguyen was accused of being drunk and acting bad at the table. However, he still won the all the money and took home the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy.

The La Classic H.O.R.S.E. tournament is not as prestigious as the WSOP, but it was still a tough event to win with 96 players. Some of the top players that participated were Men Nguyen, John Cernuto, Allen Cunningham, Layne Flack, Mike Matusow, Amnon Filippi, Gavin Smith, Eli Elezra, Jennifer Harman, Howard Lederer, Erik Seidel, David “Chino” Rheem, Jeff Madsen, Chris Ferguson, Annie Duke, and Barry Greenstein.

Nguyen beat all those players to win the first prize of $340,993. He took down last year’s WSOP Main Event finalist David “Chino” Rheem in heads-up play and Jeff Madsen finished in third place.

After the even Nguyen said,

Before I came down to play this tournament, I told myself ‘I’m going to dominate. This was a good field to play against. But the win here and at the WSOP has got to make people consider me number one in H.O.R.S.E.

PokerStars, one of the leading online poker rooms, is almost at their 25 billionth hand dealt and they are inviting everyone to the party. They celebrate dealing the milestone hand they are hosting a “25 Billion Bash”.

Even for a site as big as PokerStars, the prize package is enormous. The lucky poker player will take home a cool $100,000 in cash, but that’s not all, as they will also get a European Poker Tour Monte Carlo Grand Final prize package, a PokerStars Caribbean Adventure package, a WSOP package, and a ticket to the World Championship of Online Poker Main Event. The entire prize package is estimated to be around $150,000.

The players at the rest of the table where the landmark hand is dealt will all share $100,000 in cash and prizes. Therefore, even the players that do not win the main prize will still get some great benefits.

PokerStars is also giving away a lot of other bonuses for players that take part in the 25 Billion Bash. The action will start before the milestone hand is even dealt. PokerStars will award players that win one of the “Milestone Hands” with cash prizes, as there will be around 150 of these hands dealt. The first Milestone Hand will be the 24.85 billionth hand and that will be the first to get cash and every millionth hand after that will also get some cold hard cash.

As the 111th Congress in the U.S. has started to get to work under new president Barrack Obama, House Representative member Barney Frank has recently expressed interest to reintroduce legislation that is set up in order to counter the effects of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA).

The newspaper for the United Kingdom, the Financial Times, recently reported that Frank wants to, “reintroduce a bill in the next few weeks to establish a licensing and regulatory framework for online gambling operators.” A bill like this will probably be similar to the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act of 2007 (IGREA), which was introduced by Frank during the previous Congress. The IGREA had some support in Congress, which included having 48 co-sponsors even though the bill never was voted on in Congress.

The IGREA is of interest to poker players, as the bill wanted to both license and regulate all types of Internet gambling, not only skill games, such as bridge, mahjong, and, of course, poker, which was the main focus on other types of anti-UIGEA bills that were proposed during Congress’ previous session under the Bush administration. Online poker players are hoping that the new administration will repeal the UIGEA, which would regulate the online gambling industry as well as bring in significant amount of money to the government.

Up next for the poker pro is an upcoming bout with Theo “The Thunder” Jorgensen. The two poker professionals will fight as part of Hansen’s new website launch, which is www.gushansentv.com. This boxing card will be free to watch and will take place on February 21st of this year.

These two poker pros do not only battle on the poker tables, but also on the squash court. According to reports Hansen would start to shadow box after winning a match against Jorgensen, who would get annoyed at Hensen showing off and challenged the him to partake in a boxing match.

Besides pride, the winner will get $35,000 and Hansen said he is ready for the fight. He recently stated, “Beating up Theo in boxing will be much more enjoyable than winning over him in poker. The sweet taste of victory cannot even be made up in terms of money.”

Hansen is more excited about the upcoming launch of his website than getting in the ring. His website will have information about how he is doing in various tournaments and it will also give his fans the chance to interact with him.

The poker professional from Denmark stated, “Today’s technology means everyone can sit down with me and watch as I play live at tournaments or even just in my hotel room with friends. And because it is online, Gus TV can reach the whole world, for fans as far away as Osaka and Oklahoma.”
