Committee Approves Eric Holder for Attorney General

Eric HoldenA Senate committee in the U.S. has recently approved Eric Holder, with the approval of President Barack Obama, to serve as the nation’s Attorney General leading the Department of Justice.

The vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee was overwhelming to Holder, who has served as Bill Clinton’s Deputy Attorney General. This week the Senate will put the nomination before a full vote.

Vermont Democrat Patrick Leahy recently said that the strong approval by his panel was a sign that Holder would be conformed easily. Leahy stated, “Eric Holder is a good man. He’s a decent man. He’s a public servant committed to the rule of law and he will be a good Attorney General.”

If Holder is approved by the Senate he would be put in charge of deciding to prosecute, or not, Internet gambling operators under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

President Obama recently announced that David Ogden, who previously ran the Department of Justice’s civil division, is his choice for the post of Deputy Attorney General. Much like Holder, Ogden held posts under the Clinton Administration at the Department of Justice and the Department of Defense. If Ogden is confirmed he would be second in command to Holder.
