Internet Poker in Europe Gaining Momentum

European Union

European Union

The latest country in Europe to regulate gambling online is Spain. According to the gambling news website GamblingCompliance.com, in December of last year there were new regulations proposed, which would allow Internet gambling licenses in Spain to be issued to online gaming operators based in the European Union, while at the same time setting strict sanctions on companies that do not hold a license. There has not time set that has been set for these proposed changes to the growing market in Spain.

There is also good news for online poker players in France. There has been many swings, in terms of regulating the online gaming industry. However, the Minister of Home Affairs has recently authorized casino operators in France to organize poker tournaments, which do not take place in land-based casinos. Poker tournaments can now take place at other venues, but they have to have the same security as a casino tournament would have. This means that poker tournaments can be held at larger venues, which will increase the player field.

Italy is also reporting growth in the Internet poker market. Internet poker has only been legal in Italy for 3 months and there are very strict laws on the amount that players can bet. However, even with the wagering restrictions there has been a online poker turnover of €230 million in Italy in the 3 months since online poker became legal.
